Epigenetic regulation of translation reveals hidden variation to produce complex traits
Article Abstract:
Three plausible explanations for phenotypic diversity are examined to show that the traits tested involved [PSI+]-mediated read-through of nonsense codons. The phenotypes analyzed were genetically complex and genetic re-assortment frequently converted [PSI+] dependent phenotypes to stable traits that persisted in the absence of [PSI+].

Structural insights into a yeast prion illuminate nucleation and strain diversity
Article Abstract:
The nature of Sup35's cooperatively folded amyloid core is determined to investigate central question in prion biology. Amyloid conformers of Sup35 are the molecular embodiment of the yeast prion known as [PSI] which produces heritable changes in phenotype through self-perpetuating changes in protein folding.

A yeast prion provides a mechanism for genetic variation and phenotypic diversity
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the biological role of of PSI+, a modified protein known as a prion, in yeast. The prion is thought to be maintained through natural selection because of its ability to promote yeast-cell adaptability in changing environments.
