Estimates of extreme sperm production: morphological and experimental evidence from reproductively promiscuous fairy-wrens (Malurus)
Article Abstract:
The histology of testes of three species of fairy-wren, namely the splendid, variegated, and white-winged fairy-wren, are examined along with the quantity and quality of sperm in captive male splendid fairy-wrens to estimate the temporal pattern of sperm production and depletion. Both experimental and morphological estimates suggest that all three species of fairy-wren invest considerable energy in the production as well as the storage of massive numbers of sperm.

Genetic similarity of social mates predicts the level of extrapair paternity in splendid fairy-wrens
Article Abstract:
Studies found that levels of extrapair paternity in splendid fairy-wren broods predicted by genetic similarity between social mates. The results suggested that female splendid fairy-wrens might indirectly benefit from extrapair mating since it led to lower levels of inbreeding and increased heterozygosity in their offspring.

Montezuma oropendolas modify a component of song constrained by body size during vocal contests
Article Abstract:
Use and impact of physical constraints such as vocal chords as a means of signaling in Montezuma oropendolas is discussed. Low peak frequencies of their songs to communicate with the opposite sex are measured and determined.
