Estimating adult survival rates of New Zealand black swans banded as immatures
Article Abstract:
A new model evaluates the year-specific adult survival rates of black swans (Cygnus attratus) banded in New Zealand (1974-89) as immatures. The survival rates of immature individuals does change with time, but there are temporary changes in immature recovery rates, adult survival rates and adult recovery rates. The violation of time-variant immature survival rate obtained from the expression for bias shows that adult survival rate estimates are biased.

Probability of detecting harbor porpoise from aerial surveys: estimating g(0)
Article Abstract:
Populations of harbor porpoise are commonly underestimated because of the difficulty of detecting submerged animals from the air. Line transect sampling can bias abundance estimates because it is assumed that all porpoise adjacent to the line are spotted. An experiment assessing land-based and aerial survey procedures was conducted off Orcas Island, using g(0) estimation. Details of the experiment are presented.

Estimating survival rates with age-structure data
Article Abstract:
Among the important criteria for understanding the dynamics of wildlife populations are age-specific survival rates. A new statistical model has been developed that provides a schema for assumptions about survival rates based on standing age-at-death and age-structure data. The survival rates for female sea otters in Prince William Sound are estimated using the new model.
