Eukaryotic initiation rites
Article Abstract:
A large group of multiproteins called the origin recognition complex (ORC) has been identified as controlling chromosomal DNA replication in eukaryotic cells. DNA replication governs the transition of cells from the G1 to the S phase of the cell cycle. S.P. Bell and B. Stillman have found that, in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, ORC attaches to the replication origin and apparently entwines the DNA around itself, thus effecting replication and furthering the cycle. Determining ORC's complete structure may yield useful biochemical and immunological methods.

New eukaryotic transcriptional repressors
Article Abstract:
An Escherichia coli-encoded sequence attached to a DNA-binding fragment of GAL4 converts the latter into a highly basic repressor. A mutant derivative and a synthetic peptide prove as effective, and sometimes superior. Researchers frequently bind the same GAL4 fragment to other E. coli sequences to create activators. The new repressing regions seem to interact with and inhibit activating regions bound nearby on DNA.

Oceanic 18S rDNA sequences from picoplankton reveal unsuspected eukaryotic diversity
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the large diversity of eukaryotes which has been uncovered through the analysis of 35 full sequences of the 18S subunit of ribosomal RNA collected in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 75-meters.
