Europe's research plan still up in air
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) multi-billion dollar fourth framework program for research (1994-98) has been delayed due to disagreement among the twelve members on the issue of the budget estimate and the mode of allocation. Some feel that a compromise will be achieved during the next meeting in Dec 1993, but the Maastricht Treaty, which has not been ratified, requires agreement on all significant issues by the three EC governing bodies of commission, parliament and council of ministers.

Framework deal boosts life sciences...
Article Abstract:
The budget has been agreed for the European Union's fifth Framework program of research, although finance will not be available until autumn 1999. The new program, which covers 1999-2002, allows increased funding for life sciences and industrial technologies, but less for nuclear research. A total of Ecu14.9 billion has been allocated to the program, up 4.6% from the fourth Framework.
