Evaluation of translocation for the threatened Florida scrub-jay
Article Abstract:
The Florida scrub-jay has been affected by the disappearance of its habitat in oak scrub on the peninsular of Florida. A project involved the relocation of 20 scrub jays to the Rookery bay National Estuarine Research Reserve from Archbold Biological Station. The jays were introduced into unoccupied areas and there were successful nestings from 1989 to 1997. Translocation has been shown to be useful, though there are not enough suitable sites for this method, which cannot replace management of populations that already exist.

Demographic consequences of incest avoidance in the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker
Article Abstract:
Incest avoidance leads to a substantial decline in the reproductive potential of the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker Melanerpes formicivorus. This indicates that there are negative genetic consequences of inbreeding depression similar to those seen in humans and in captive populations of vertebrates. These findings are significant for the conservation of falling and remnant populations of vertebrates.

Patterns and consequences of egg destruction among joint-nesting acorn woodpeckers
Article Abstract:
Nineteen joint nests of the acorn woodpeckers were studied to show that 38% of the total eggs laid were destroyed by fellow female woodpeckers due to reproductive competition. Discrimination between eggs was possible only when runt eggs were laid. No genetic correlation for discrimination of eggs was found. Destruction of the eggs by the fellow females had its effect on the degree of joint-nesting.
