Exclusion of natural enemies as a tool in managing rare plant species
Article Abstract:
Natural enemies such as native insect herbivores can limit the survival, growth, and reproduction of threatened plant species like Pitcher's thistle. Insecticides are applied cautiously in a rigorous, controlled, and small-scale experiment. The chronic herbivory by coevolved insect herbivores limits the population density and fitness of the other species.

Invasiveness of some biological control insects and adequacy of their ecological risk assessment and regulation
Article Abstract:
Biological control through the release of natural enemies carries unanticipated ecological risks. The ecological risks due to the deliberate introduction of weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus) and an adventitious weevil (Larinus planus) for the biological control of exotic thistles are reviewed.

Protection from natural enemies in managing rare plant species
Article Abstract:
Protecting rare plants from their natural predators can enhance their ability to thrive. Protecting juvenile Pitcher's thistle from insects led to a 53% drop in juvenile plant mortality and a 10-fold increase in seed production.
