Experimental confirmation of universality for a phase transition in two dimensions
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to determine whether the universality hypothesis about the scaling behavior of thermodynamic variables would hold over 18 orders of magnitude. Using idealized models, it was shown that a two-dimensional system exhibits properties similar to that of a two-dimensional Ising model when is reaches the vicinity of the critical point in phase transition.

An inverse transition of magnetic domain patterns in ultrathin films
Article Abstract:
Materials scientists have discovered a rare inverse transition effect in ultrathin iron films. As temperature is increased, the stripe domain changes into a labyrinthine structure, and then back into less symmetrical state before loss of magnetic order occurs. This reaction existed only in theory until these observations occurred.

Speed limit ahead
Article Abstract:
The general way to reverse the direction of a spin is to apply a magnetic field along the spin axis. However, a basic knowledge of magnetic resonance suggests that reversing the spin require a magnetic-field pulse that is perpendicular to the spin direction.
