Experimental effects of hiking on breeding Mexican Spotted Owls
Article Abstract:
The differences in the duration and frequency of eight behaviors as well as in the type and frequency of owl vocalization between hiking and control treatments are examined to assess the effect of hikers on breeding owls. The cumulative effects of high levels of short-duration recreational hiking near nests can be detrimental to Mexican Spotted Owls and monitoring of owl occupancy, net success and hiking intensity in the high-use canyons is recommended.
