Article Abstract:
A paper from R.D. Norris and U. Rohl, which showed that the previous view of the global carbon cycle is inaccurate, will have an impact on the view of some aspects of the future of the Earth. According to the authors, around 55 million years ago temperatures in the deep oceans and at high latitudes rose by 5-7 degrees, an occurrence known as the late Palaeocene thermal maximum. At the same there was a fall in the C/C ratio of carbon on the surface of the earth.

Rapid accumulation and turnover of soil carbon in a re-establishing forest
Article Abstract:
A study of carbon accumulation by pine ecosystems on previously cultivated soils in South Carolina, USA is presented. Newly accumulated carbon had a distinctive (super14)C signature from thermonuclear bomb testing during the 1960s. Bomb radiocarbon was rapidly incorporated into the young aggrading forest floor. However carbon accumulated only in forest biomass, forest floor and the upper 7.% cm of mineral soil by the 1990s.
