Fatal attraction to cyanobacteria?
Article Abstract:
Several recent cases of dogs dying in Scotland after ingesting lake shore scum containing toxic cyanobacteria may indicate that the taste or smell of the poisonous compounds attracted the dogs. The cases, which occurred in 1990, 1991 and in May and Jun 1992, resemble earlier incidents reported as far back as 1878. The interesting detail in some of the modern cases is that the dogs could have gotten to parts of the lake shore not contaminated by the toxic microorganisms, suggesting the presence of attractants in the poisonous scum.

Niche adaptation in ocean cyanobacteria
Article Abstract:
Synechococcus and prochlorococcus cyanobacteria are abundant in oceans, but little is known about their genetic structure. A study has revealed the distinct prochlorococcus clades have adapted to their surface and deep oceanic niches. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ws used to amplify fragments of RNA polymerase C1 gene from ocean bacteria. Two major clades were formed by prochlorococcus, and synechococcus sequences were observed in each surface library, divided into eight or more clades.
