Female preference for dynamic traits in the green swordtail, Xiphophorus helleri
Article Abstract:
Male morphology and courtship behavior are the major factors which influence the female preference of mate selection in the green swordtail. Video-recorded sequences of the same male engaged in a courtship display, performing feeding activity, and remaining inactive were shown to females. Females preferred sequences of courting males to all other conditions. Females show similar behavior towards feeding and inactive conditions. Their interest depends upon a specific set of motor patterns.

The role of sexual selection in the loss of sexually selected traits in the swordfish Xiphophorus continens
Article Abstract:
The mating behavior of Xiphophorus continens is compared to that of other swordtail fish to determine whether a relaxation of sexual selection have played a role in the loss of large male sizes and the pigment pattern vertical bars. X.continens lacked the courtship behaviors present in other swordtail species and the female mating preference for male size and male response to the pigment pattern vertical bars are significantly weaker than in other swordtails.
