Finland: faith in a European future
Article Abstract:
The worsening state of Finland's economy has reversed the 20-year trend of increasing public expenditure on scientific research. Equipment is not being replaced and salaries have been cut by four percent. The Academy of Finland is hoping to organize larger research groups and focus its funds in areas of recognized strength. Competition has prompted international cooperation, and Finland has departed from its habitual neutrality to pursue joint international projects.

Low-temperature gains
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Helsinki Technical University's Low Temperature Laboratory have developed a new instrument for magnetoencephalography, which uses 122 channels to map the magnetic currents in different parts of the brain simultaneously. The Finish government does not find a conflict of interest between the commercialization of this device and the researchers' use of government funds. Indeed, the government encourages such commercialization.
