Heading into an uncertain future
Article Abstract:
Competition for research funds in the Scandinavian countries will become more intense as their governments move away from broad welfare policies toward a market-based, industry-driven approach to scientific research. Previously researchers were well supported but their work sometimes was not responsive to the needs of industry. The trend is toward industrialists, rather than academic investigators, being given charge of technology programs.

Sweden's central role
Article Abstract:
Scientific collaboration among Nordic countries is increasing, with Sweden assuming the dominant role. An analysis of articles published between 1975 and 1990 shows that co-authorship of scientific papers by researchers from different Nordic countries is increasing, though collaboration with continental Europe and the US has grown even faster. Clinical medicine and biomedicine have been particularly affected by this trend.

Universities tighten their belts
Article Abstract:
Universities have proliferated in Finland over the past few decades, and currently number more than 40. The collapse of the Finnish economy has forced large cuts in public expenditures, including funding for universities. Efficiency requires the consolidation of research groups in Finland, with resources concentrated on the more productive ones.
