First family: the Bronx Zoo's gorillas move to a new home
Article Abstract:
The Bronx Zoo maintains a successful breeding program of the western lowland gorilla whose natural habitat is declining in central Africa. The captive gorillas have a complex social structure and have been separated into two families, each led by a silverback male. The zoo's Gorilla Species Survival Plan allows gorilla exchanges with other zoos to help maintain the genetic and social health of the animals.
