Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries nongame and endangered wildlife program
Article Abstract:
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) pursued the development of an effective Nogame and Endangered Species Program during the 1980s. The program uses surveys and other methods to obtain animal habitat and population information, which are later analyzed by means of scientific research and studies. Species are then ranked according to data generated from these processes and are listed with the approval of Board officials. The VDGIF formulates conservation strategies for listed animals for implementation and inclusion in official state recovery plans.

Relief for private landowners
Article Abstract:
The Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a new and far-reaching solution to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) which will remove private landowner activities that have only minor or negligible effect on endangered species. The new proposal would eliminate much of the criticism of the ESA by eliminating home construction and commercial or non-commercial low-impact activities from ESA restrictions. The proposal may be an important step in balancing conservation goals with the need for easing ESA impacts.
