Florida's nongame and endangered species programs
Article Abstract:
Florida has enacted several laws for the protection of endangered species since 1893. However, it was only in 1976 that a comprehensive program was finally put in place with the creation of a Nongame Wildlife Program and the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission's decision to participate in an Endangered Species Cooperative Agreement with the US Fish and Wild life Service. The Nongame Wildlife Program is concerned with wildlife, habitat protection, education and urban wildlife. The endangered species program, on the other hand, is involved with coordination, listing, law enforcement, research, technical assistance and education.

Endangered Species Act reauthorization efforts continue
Article Abstract:
Supporters of the Endangered Species Act are expected to face major challenges in their efforts to reauthorize the bill. The biggest challenge is presented by Congress, which is dominated by Republican leaders who strongly oppose the reauthorization. Although the bill still remains intact, critics believe that the new leadership's amendments to the legislation will move toward its repeal instead of prevention of species endangerment.
