The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has urged the Congress to seek help from the National Academies to examine new ways of organizing federal food-safety system in the U.S. An inter-agency panel to coordinate food safety, revision of legislation and a coordinated research program to inform food safety policy and practice are some of the simple approaches that can be used to enhance food-safety system.

Suppressed study raises spectra of flawed drug regulation in US
Article Abstract:
The withdrawal of Vioxx, a prescription painkiller drug made by New Jersey based Merck by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has resulted in increased pressure on FDA to reform the way it monitors approved drugs. David Graham, associate director for science at the FDA's Office of Drug Safety has estimated that Vioxx is responsible for several thousand deaths since it was approved in 1999.
