Food selection and feather molt by nonbreeding American green-winged teal in Texas playas
Article Abstract:
Green-winged teal demonstrate a consistent pattern between years and among age-sex cohorts of choosing invertebrates and using seeds less than their availability. This research, carried out among nonbreeding American green-winged teal in the Southern High Plains of Texas, sought to assess use and selection of food items, feather-molt intensity and the link between invertebrate consumption and molt intensity. Invertebrates are a significant food for green-winged teal, although they have not received much attention in playa management for nonbreeding waterfowl. Playa management should seek to produce large quantities of invertebrates and natural seeds.

Declining body condition of northern pintails wintering in the Playa Lakes region
Article Abstract:
The body condition data of northern pintails (Anas acuta) populations arriving and wintering in the Playa Lake Region (PLR) of Texas, U.S., in 1984-1985 and 2002-2003 were compared to identify changes between the reference periods. The body conditions of the pintails had declined by a mean of 32% and the reduction is suggested to be related to drop in migration and wintering habitat quantity and quality within the PLR.

Habitat use by migrant shorebirds in saline lakes of the Southern Great Plains
Article Abstract:
The effect of the availability of invertebrates, salinity, freshwater springs, vegetation and water on the value of saline lakes as migration stopovers is examined by comparing lakes used and not used by migrant shorebirds. The results have shown that reduced spring flows and increased salinity have negatively affected the availability of shorebird habitats and aquatic invertebrates.
