Forensic team digs up Haiti's deadly past
Article Abstract:
Dead bodies of people, killed in the demonstration held against the coup in Haiti on Oct 2, 1991, are being exhumed by forensic experts. The Commission on Truth and Justice is trying to make a scientific study to establish the existence of human rights violations in the island. The cause of death is very difficult to establish, as experts found that the dead bodies have fractured bones. A report on these findings will be made public in Dec 1995.

EPA science 'overburdened by Congress'
Article Abstract:
Scientific research at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) comprises a 'discontinuous series of broad, shallow efforts' according to an EPA research office assessment. The assessment notes that the EPA's main constituencies appear to view science and analysis as an obstacle to regulatory action. It calls for special provisions to be made for the Office of Research and Development to plan and support mid-term research.

US cancer body calls for ideas from all disciplines
Article Abstract:
The US National Cancer Institute (NCI) is calling for more innovative technologies for cancer research and treatment. The NCI is aiming to spend $48 million over five years on novel approaches, as part of a broader programme at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), of which the NCI is the largest. It is expected that multi-disciplinary teams will be supported, and contracts will be issued, rather than grants.
