France may break ranks over space station
Article Abstract:
In Mar 1995, the European Space Agency (ESA) decided to drop the construction of a crew rescue vehicle (CRV) for the international space station Alpha. ESA's contribution to the space station will now be only the Columbus Orbiting Facility (COF) and the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). France has decided to build the CRV with the help of the RKV, the Russian agency. CRV's design will now be based on that of the Russian Soyuz vehicle with upgraded technology. The French proposal comes after its decision to cut back on its contribution to ESA because of the ESA's budgetary problems.

Space agency reform plans under scrutiny
Article Abstract:
The world's third largest space agency and France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) is planning a major restructuring. CNES is to meet the challenges created by the end of the Cold War and the enhanced commercialization of space activities. Adaptation difficulties have arisen due to conflict over the agency's aims. The agency will also have to make economies of 5% a year over the 1996-2000 period to be able to contribute to to the European Space Agency's space station program. The CNES also needs to focus its efforts toward long-term research and development.

France shifts research focus on to new regional centers
Article Abstract:
The Jacques Chirac government in France has adopted a policy of creating regional research centers to decentralize research and increase the interaction between research institutes. Under this scheme Institut Jean-Roche and Institut Federaliste de Recherche de Biologie du Developpement have been formed. These institutes will collect scientists from universities, hospitals and other institutes for specific research at one place.
