France takes control of genome programme
Article Abstract:
The French government proposes to assume control of public funded research on the human genome from its national genome agency, in an effort to develop a national strategy for life sciences. The move will restrict funding for the agency, known as the Groupment de Recherches et d'Etudes surles Genomes (GREG), from FF80 million to FF20 million. The money obtained from GREG's budget will be directed to the ministry of higher education and research to develop new programs on genetic function, medical genetics and genetics and the environment.

France faces large bill over its space station agreement
Article Abstract:
France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiale (CNES) will have to pay US$2.17 million between a period of 1996-2000 to pay for its participation in the international space station. To pay this amount, there will be 1/3 cuts in national space programs and 2/3 cuts in European Space Agency programs. Although some national programs will be delayed to make economies, there will be no change in the spot-5 Earth satellite and Stentor telecommunication satellite programs.
