A belated agreement that requires faster progress
Article Abstract:
A concordat announced by the UK's university vice-chancellors and research funding councils in 1996 is slowly being realized in practice. The concordat aims to underpin the provision of employment rights and support for postdoctoral and other contract researchers. The concordat does not address pay scales as its focus is on maternity leaves, salaries that reflect experience and seniority, adequate training and conscientious monitoring of progress and career advice. Although the concordat was actively promoted by the UK government, postdoctoral researchers in universities are still getting a better deal than government researchers.

Bright prospects for British biotech
Article Abstract:
Immunologists in Germany are usually hired for marketing, consultation and service rather than for research and development. The job market for immunologists in both France and Germany remain limited. However, immunologists can find better employment opportunities in the United Kingdom because of an expanded cooperation between academe and industry and a more advanced commercialization infrastructure of biotechnology. The search for new immunotherapies is expected to boost the job market for immunologists in Europe.

Molecular biology skills in demand in Europe
Article Abstract:
Graduates with molecular biology skills are in high demand in various fields of medical science in Europe. Even immunology graduates with limited experience are highly employable in both industry and academic research. The UK Medical Research Council, in particular, is actively seeking people with backgrounds in immunological manipulations. The commercial sector is hiring immunologists with specialties ranging from molecules to whole animals.
