Freshwater snails alter habitat use in response to predation
Article Abstract:
The presence or absence of pumpkinseed sunfish in lakes significantly affects the use of habitat by snails. Physella move under covered habitats when the risk of predation is higher. Physella snails show a high rate of survivorship in pools offering a covered habitat. Physella increase their habitat use in water where crushed snails were previously present, as compared to water where live pumpkinseeds were present. Physella avoid moving to the surface in response to mortality risk only if a covered habitat is available.

A predatory snail distinguishes between conspecific and heterospecific snails and trails based on chemical cues in slime
Article Abstract:
A study on how wolfsnails distinguish conspecifics from prey snail and how they determine the directional of conspecific mucus trails was performed. The study revealed that wolfsnail used chemical cues present in the mucus to distinguish conspecific from prey and were less likely to attack a snail covered with wolfsnail mucus than one covered with prey mucus.
