Hongyun Huang, a neurosurgeon at Chaoyang Hospital Beijing has developed a successful treatment for patients suffering from ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by injecting cells taken from nasal tissue in fetuses. He has made his reputation among his patients by treating neurological problems, from spinal injuries to degenerative disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

The achievements of Yang Liwei, a Chinese born astronaut who completed 14 orbits of the Earth in 1960-Soviet technology craft, is described. This failed to occupy media coverage as the outburst of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which began in the rural province of Guangdong, claimed most of it.
