Fuel additives put under scrutiny-again
Article Abstract:
Researchers have questioned the benefits of fuel oxygenates and want to see the most common additive, methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), phased out. The additives aimed to reduce toxic air pollutants and exhaust emissions, but soon after MTBE became widely used in 1992, complaints were received by health officials of headaches, nausea and other adverse effects. There have been reviews of the issue and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has asked an expert panel to again review possible health and environmental problems linked to oxygenates.

US sends mixed message in GM debate
Article Abstract:
US Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman has acknowledge the need for unbiased research to assure the public about the safety of genetically modified (GM) foods. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will seek an independent review of the science behind product approval, which may be undertaken by the National Research Council. Regional centres may also be established which will evaluate biotech products over a long period of time, although it is not known whether they will undertake long-term ecological studies of GM crops.
