Furtive mating in female chimpanzees
Article Abstract:
An investigation of reproductive behaviour in a community of West African pan troglodytes verus chimpanzees from the Tai Forest, Ivory Coast, has produced genetic evidence that female chimpanzees seek to mate outside their own social group. This contradicts the traditional view that reproductive units in chimpanzee communities correspond exactly with social units. Research was undertaken over 17 years, and during the whole of that time there was no recorded incident of adult females approaching neighbouring community males apart from in conflict situations. It can therefore be assumed that mating outside social groups takes place very furtively.

Female reproductive strategies, paternity and community structure in wild West African chimpanzees
Article Abstract:
The behavior of 55 wild chimpanzees of Tai Forest, Cote d'Ivoire was studied to determine the genetic structure of a habituated chimpanzee community. Results indicate that female chimpanzees do not restrict themselves to the confines of their own social unit to find their mate. Hence, this female reproductive strategy elevates gene flow between communities despite male philopatry. Furthermore, this mate selection method disaffirms the theory of high-relatedness among community males.

Anthrax kills wild chimpanzees in a tropical rainforest
Article Abstract:
An infectious disease is claiming the life of many wild chimpanzees and also leading to loss of habitat and hunting. Deaths caused by anthrax in the Tai National pork-ivory coast are investigated.
