Genetic divergence, speciation and morphological stasis in a lineage of African cichlid fishes
Article Abstract:
The endemic cichlid fishes of the Tropheus lineage in East Africa's Lake Tanganyika combine extreme genetic diversity with a lack of morphological alteration. The six Tanganyika species display twice the genetic variation found in the Lake Malawi species and six times the variation found in the Lake Victoria species. Furthermore, the dispersal of genetic variation among the Lake Tanganyika species indicates that changes in lake level influenced the species' geographical distribution and speciation.

Sympatric speciation in Nicaraguan crater lake cichlid fish
Article Abstract:
A convincing case of sympatric speciation in the Midas cichlid species complex in a young and small volcanic crater lake in Nicaragua is presented. The finding that the two Amphilophus species from Lake Apoyo differ in eco-morphological traits and resource utilization indicates that ecological disruptive selection played a principal part in the speciation event.

An extant cichlid fish radiation emerged in an extinct Pleistocene lake
Article Abstract:
A genetic, morphological and biogeographically evidence suggesting that the riverine cichlids are products of a recent adaptive radiation in a large lake that dried up in the Holocene is presented. Its species richness peaks steeply in an area for which geological data reveal the historical existence of lake palaeo- Makgadikgadi.
