Genetic effects of multiple generations of supportive breeding
Article Abstract:
The effects of multiple generations of supportive breeding on rates of inbreeding and genetic drift are studied and the recurrence equations for the inbreeding coefficient and coancestry, and thereby equations for inbreeding and variance effective sizes, are derived under three models for selective captive breeders. The results show that the genetic effects of a single generation supportive breeding is a successful program as it increases the census population size, it may reduce the genetically effective population size and thereby induce excessive inbreeding and loss of genetic variation.

Supportive breeding and inbreeding effective number: reply to Nomura
Article Abstract:
Tetsuro Nomura uses a different formula from the one suggested by others for inbreeding effective number because definitions vary. Neither approach is necessarily in error. The concept of supportive breeding was introduced to address practical genetic problems seen when weak natural populations are managed through release of individuals bred in captivity.

Application of the One-Migrant-per-Generation Rule to Conservation and Management
Article Abstract:
An equation is presented for evaluating the appropriateness of permitting one migrant per generation to create gene flow among dispersed species populations. The equation shows that, overall, this method is valid for the conditions listed.
