Genetically lean mice result from targeted disruption of the RII-beta subunit of protein kinase A
Article Abstract:
Regulatory (R)-II-beta holoenzyme mediates energy balance and adiposity. Mice with disrupted R-II-beta subunit of protein kinase A seem to be healthy, but lack normal amount of white adipose tissue despite normal food intake. They fail to develop diet-dependent obesity and fatty livers. The mutant brown adipose tissue reveals an increase in RI-alpha, which replaces the lost RII-beta. The functioning of this holoenzyme leads to uncoupling protein induction, and metabolic rate and body temperature elevations, which result in the lean shape of the phenotype.

Control of p70 S6 kinase by kinase activity of FRAP in vivo
Article Abstract:
FKBP12-rapamycin-associated-protein (FRAP) may mediate the immunosuppressant activity of FKBP12, which inhibits a mitogenic-activated signalling pathway that causes the activation of p70 S6 kinase and cyclin-dependent kinases. FRAP autophosphorylates in vitro while its in vivo autophosphorylation is inhibited by FKBP12-rapamycin. Deletion studies show that twin domains in FRAP are essential for in vivo p70 S6 kinase activation and that an amino-terminal site is also needed.

Protein kinase C is required for light adaptation in Drosophila photoreceptors
Article Abstract:
Eye-specific protein kinase C (PKC) is required for light adaptation in Drosophila, and in its absence individual quantum bumps do not terminate normally. The PKC mutant inaC does not perform either of these functions properly under physiological conditions. PKC is also apparently needed to end the light-induced rise in cytosolic CA(2+) in Drosophila. These mechanisms allow the fly's photoreceptors to adjust their sensitivity for ambient light.
