Remembering elephants at CITES
Article Abstract:
The inclusion of the African elephant on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora's (CITES) Appendix I should be retained. CITES signatories will decide on Mar 1992 on the southern African nations' proposal to lift the ivory-trade ban. These nations and outside environmental groups disagree about the consequences of ending the ban. Keeping the elephants on Appendix I would maintain the ban, while listing them on Appendix II would allow trade in elephant meat and hide, jeopardizing the animals' existence. Poaching is unabated in Africa, merely due to the belief of an impending trade resumption.

Conservation spotlight: trumpeters swan. Wisconsin's cooperative conservation program
Article Abstract:
The Wisconsin Trumpeter Swan Recovery Program aims to restore a reasonable number of breeding and migrating trumpeter swan pairs, which have become severely endangered due to large-scale hunting. The main focus is on collecting swan eggs, captive breeding and release of swans. The collected eggs are hatched in special incubators, reared, and reintroduced by either decoy rearing or brooder rearing. The released swans are banded and collared for monintoring purposes and to prevent accidental shooting. Several public and private institutions have supported the program.
