Japan sharpens selection of grant winners
Article Abstract:
The changes in procedures for providing competitive research grants in Japan will increase transparency in the selection process and raise the chances of highly rated grant applications being selected. The Science Council of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture will release the names of the members of the review committees. Grant applications will be given absolute scores. The number of grade categories have been decreased. According to critics, there should be a thorough evaluation of the grant applications. The rejected applications should receive feedback.

Japan: from rags to riches, but where to go next?
Article Abstract:
The allied occupation of Japan till 1953, together with the democratizing reforms of General Douglas MacArthur, influenced the dramatic revival of Japanese science in the post-war era. Changes in the administrative, social, and economic institutions along with reformation of the university system, brought about rapid growth. Liberal government aid for research programs to universities and laboratories ensures continuous progress in basic sciences. The national government directly controls all science and technology establishments with future emphasis on basic research.
