Weizmann thinks big
Article Abstract:
According to Haim Harari, president of the Weizmann Institute, Israel, the institute funds projects only in those fields which have scientists of the highest grade and it invests enough to make the project one of the best in that field. This is to overcome Israel's policy of funding many projects by giving each small grants rather than concentrating on fewer larger projects. The institute set up in 1949 with financial aid from Chaim Weizmann, a Russian-born chemist, has managed to overcome all financial difficulties since the 1980s.

French labs funded by 'big science' cuts
Article Abstract:
France's minister for national education, research and technology, Claude Allegre, has announced a FFr53 billion budget for research and development, while creating research posts for an extra 600 scientists. The funding increase will be paid for by a reduction in funding for so-called 'big science', such as manned space flights. A new FFr50 million postdoctoral fellowship scheme has also been launched, while tax breaks for large companies will be discontinued.
