German physicians warn of genetics risks
Article Abstract:
The German section of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War is opposing the Council of Europe's proposed Bioethics Convention. According to them, the Convention fails to safeguard the interests of the mentally handicapped and is vulnerable to abuse. Michael Wunder, a psychologist working for mentally handicapped people, feels that the Convention can be misused as it allows research to be conducted on persons incapable of giving consent. Ludger Honnefelder, director of the Bonn Institute for Science and Ethics opines that the text has been misunderstood.
