Germany courts consensus not controversy
Article Abstract:
The German government has adopted a new policy for dealing with issues concerned with basic and applied research. The negative attitude of politicians and industrialists toward basic research has led to the discontinuing of basic science research. Researchers are now more oriented toward industries. The aim of the new policy is not to eliminate research in the basic sciences but to form a committee that will help allocate funds for basic and applied research. The German government has also refused to allow the industries to control the research institutions as it may hinder progress in basic research.

Germany: a phoenix tastes freedom
Article Abstract:
The efforts of a group of scientists led by nuclear physicists Otto Hahn and Werner Heisenberg, led to the rapid recovery and growth of science in post-war Germany. Research work is centered around the Max Planck Society. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft set up by Heisenberg, functions as a funding agency for university research. Funding for large research establishments such as atomic research centres is shared between federal and Lander governments. Smaller projects are financed by different departments, with an agency coordinating the efforts at the federal level.
