Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-99)
Article Abstract:
Nuclear chemist Glenn T. Seaborg gained a strong reputation for his great commitment to his work, especially the expansion of the periodic table. Between 1942 and 1946, he headed a large group of PhD chemists working on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago. This work involved finding a chemical procedure for isolating plutonium from highly irradiated uranium. His work in the transuranium field led to him receiving the Nobel prize in 1951. He became US Atomic Energy Commission Chmn in 1961, and played a significant role in the growth of the civilian nuclear-power programme.
