Global agencies hold the financial key
Article Abstract:
Research funding for the control and prevention of malaria will soon increase now that science bodies all over the world are interested in working on an international programme to stem the disease. Approximately $160 mil US was spent on global malaria research programmes in 1997. The World Health Organisation will donate an additional $10 mil US to malaria research in 1997. Top scientists such as US National Institutes of Health Harold Varmus hope to attract more funding from industry.

The spirit of Dakar: a call for action on malaria
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of governments all over the world understand the urgent need for malaria control in Africa. More than a million Africans die from malaria every year, and that number will increase if nothing is done to prevent disease transmission or control symptoms. International representatives at the 1997 Malaria in Africa meeting, held in Dakar, Africa, emphasized government committment to a global malaria research programme.
