Gore under fire in controversy over South Africa AIDS drug law
Article Abstract:
South Africa's Medicines and Related Substances Control Amendment Act, which aims to bypass existing patents to permit the production or import of costly AIDS drugs at substantially lower prices than those demanded at present by the pharmaceutical industry, has been opposed by US Vice-President Al Gore. His stance has attracted considerable controversy, with his opponents alleging that he is seeking to deny low-cost drugs to a country where AIDS is a serious problem. They also claim that he is being influenced by links with the pharmaceutical industry.

Budget politics jeopardizes US drugs credit
Article Abstract:
A tax credit enjoyed by pharmaceutical companies that manufacture drugs for rare diseases may be among the casualties of the budget conflict between the White House and Congress. The 'orphan drug tax credit,' which was created under the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, expired in 1994. Republican legislators are proposing to extend it retroactively, but this proposal is included in the budget plan that they had submitted to Pres. Clinton. It this plan is rejected, then the proposed extension of the tax will also be rejected.

Experts clash over likely impact of cheap AIDS drugs in Africa
Article Abstract:
In March 2001, some of the major drug companies decided to dramatically reduce the prices of AIDS drugs to countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70% of the world's HIV-infected people live. The decision has proved to be controversial as some public-health experts feel that the money spent on AIDS drugs will be taken away from AIDS prevention, and that insufficient infrastructure will lead to inefficient drug distribution, which may lead to new strains of the virus developing.
