Growth of an isolated elk population
Article Abstract:
The Arid Lands Ecology (ALE) Reserve in south central Washington has been sheltering a herd of elk and these have been growing in isolation. It has been observed that there was a decline in calf-cow ratio within the periods 1987-1991 followed by an upward climb which continued up to the end of the observation period in 1993. Since there was no evidence of mortality among the cows, the decline may have been due to female migration because of herd density and/or predation on the young calves.

Estimated age structure of wolves in northeastern Minnesota
Article Abstract:
The survival rates, longevity, and the turnover of wildlife population are better understood through knowledge of population age structures but in the case of wolves (Canis lupus) such information is meager. The method of estimating the age of wolves based on tooth wear of known-aged animals was used to estimate the age structure of a population of wolves in the Superior National Forest (SNF) of northeastern Minnesota, USA.
