Guides to experiments
Article Abstract:
A new in vitro system for changing pre-messenger RNA into what is generally considered to be an intermediate form has been developed that promises to greatly ease the process of RNA editing. M. Harris and S. Hajduk developed one system whereas D.J. Koslowski and colleagues developed the other. The systems allow the formation of gRNA-mRNA chimaeric molecules in vitro, an essential step to gene transcript maturation. Moreover, the new technique may determine gRNA's exact role in editing.

RNA editing as a source of genetic variation
Article Abstract:
A comparative study of the edited genes in the insect parasite Herpetomonas indicate that RNA editing occurs extensively in the mitochondria of the insect and this results in faster rate of mutation. Using polymerase chain reaction techniques, it was shown that RNA editing is not an effective means of sequence conservation and that edited proteins evolve 84% faster than their unedited counterparts.
