HOT and the North Pacific gyre
Article Abstract:
Data from the Hawaiian Ocean Time Series (HOT) station ALOHA was used to indicate that the structure and productivity of the subtropical North Pacific's pelagic ecosystem had significantly changed. The validity of this assumption is questioned because the ALOHA station may not represent the anticyclonic central gyre. However, the ALOHA station was established as an oligotrophic ocean benchmark by the US Joint Global Ocean Flux Study and no equivalent, synoptic oceanographic data set has been proposed to replace ALOHA's data.

Reduced mixing generates oscillations and chaos in the oceanic deep chlorophyll maximum
Article Abstract:
Study is conducted to show that reduced vertical mixing can generate oscillations and chaos in phytoplankton biomass and species composition of deep chlorophyll maxima (DCMs), which are widespread in large parts of the world's oceans. It is indicated that reduced mixing caused by global warming will generate more variability in DCMs, thereby enhancing variability in oceanic primary production and in carbon export into the ocean interior.

Phosphorus, the staff of life
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the nutrient dynamics of phosphorus, which is present in every cell. The phosphorus content of 56 North American lakes and the uptake of phosphorus by microorganisms in the lakes is discussed.
