US Congress urged to back further Agent Orange studies
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Medicine has told Congress that further research on the effects of Agent Orange is merited. The report overturns previous recommendations claiming that the effects of the defoliant are too hard to pinpoint. New technology and information on the use of Agent Orange make a new study feasible, according to the Institute. The Institute recommended that a non-government agency conduct research to find out how many Vietnam veterans were exposed to the chemical. If numbers are substantial an extensive epidemiological study to determine Agent Orange's effects would be merited.

NIH urged to address chimp care 'crisis'
Article Abstract:
A Chimpanzee Management Program (ChiMP) providing lifelong care for research chimps in the US should be set up at the office of the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to a report from the National Academy of Sciences. The culling of chimps long longer needed for research is rejected in the report, despite the fact there is a surplus following an NIH sponsored breeding programme. Animal rights groups have called on the government to provide retirement sanctuaries for the chimps.
