HUGO and HGS clash over 'utility' of gene sequences in US patent law
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Organization (HUGO) is concerned about attempts to undermine the patenting of human genes by either demanding too much from the laws or by rejecting them. The Human Genome Sciences (HGS) wants patents for all gene sequences it has discovered even if their biological functions have not yet been identified. According to HUGO, this will benefit those who make routine discoveries of gene sequences and not those who actually discover their function. The European Parliament, on the other hand, has rejected attempts to pass any patent laws for gene sequences.

British MPs 'likely to oppose gene patents.'
Article Abstract:
Members of an all-party committee of the House of Commons in the UK imply a likelihood of recommending against gene patents in a parliamentary vote on the patenting of human genes. These members of the Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology view DNA sequences as pure knowledge, and hence are increasingly against gene patenting. The members will be required to vote on coordinating biotechnology patent legislation throughout the European Union.

HUGO approves ethics code for genomics
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Organization has released a code of ethics for genomics research which states that genetics researchers should not give any form of undue inducements to people participating in gene mapping and other experiments. However, the code provides that the different types of agreement which may be reached may include provision of health care and the use of a percentage of royalties for humanitarian purposes.
