Genetic diversity proposals fails to impress international ethics panel
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Diversity Project (HGD), a multimillion-dollar project for collecting samples of DNA from various ethnic groups, for studying genetic variation internationally, failed to elicit funding and support from UNESCO. The Human Genome Organization which was funding the project earlier, had stopped doing so due to controversies arising because of HGD's methodology and its implications. UNESCO's International Bioethics Committee has endorsed the criticism against HGD by Indigenous people from Solomon Islands and demanded ethical and social explanations from HGD.

Weed-killing at Weizmann
Article Abstract:
Jonathan Gressel, working in the plant genetics department of Weizmann Institute, Israel, has developed an herbicide to kill the parasitic flowering plants, broomrape and witchweed which cause severe crop damage in Africa, the Mediterranean and West Asia. The parasites develop in the roots of the host and the herbicide is transported through the host's vascular system to the roots. The enzymes of the host plants are modified so that they do not react with the herbicide but the weeds soon develop mutations that make them resistant to the herbicide.
