Habitat conservation plans and the incidental take permit planning process: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife perspective
Article Abstract:
Non-federal entities can legally undertake economic development projects even if these may result in an incidental take of an endangered species. Under the Endangered Species Act, habitat conservation plans (HCPs) allow the pursuit of such activities as long as the conservation of federally listed, proposed, and candidate species is assured. The task of reducing conflicts between listed species and development projects rests on the Fish and Wildlife Service, whose job is to reconcile the biological and economic factors involved in these projects.

Conservation spotlight: African wild dogs
Article Abstract:
The African wild dog is a seriously endangered animal. Its population has declined from hundreds of thousands to just less than 5,000 at present. The population's decline in the early 20th century was due to extermination programs by ranchers. In recent years, their dwindling number can be attributed to the spread of disease and to inbreeding. The Philadelphia Zoological Garden's One With Nature conservation program is currently sponsoring two projects intended to protect the African wild dog.
