Foraging efficiency in the wood ant, Formica rufa: is time of the essence in trail following?
Article Abstract:
Research describing trail route choice by wood ants is presented. It is shown that in all experimental cases the ants selected the quickest, shortest routes and that savings in energy explained the choice of routes.

Habitat-related aggressive behaviour between neighbouring colonies of the polydomous wood ant Formica aquilonia
Article Abstract:
The way in which habitat destruction, in the form of clear-cutting, affects aggressiveness between neighboring ant colonies in the case of a wood ant, Formica aquilonia, was analyzed. It was found that this aggression may be the result of increased intraspecific resource competition or alienation of neighboring colonies caused by the loss of visual orientation cues.
