Head lifting by female copperheads, Agkistrodon contortrix, during courtship: potential mate choice
Article Abstract:
Head lifting by female copperheads is not a sign of non-receptivity but a display of courtship behavior. Response to head lifting differs with males of differing dominance status. Those males that recently lost fights show repulsion towards the females adopting the posture. However, those that recently won fights challenge the females that lifted the head. But fighting never occurs, and courtship is resumed in these cases. Head lifting is perceived as a mechanism of female choice that involves intra-specific sexual mimicry.

Spatial learning of an escape task by young corn snakes, Elaphe guttata guttata
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine if the young corn snakes Elaphe guttata guttata can learn a behaviorally relevant spatial task. The behavior of 17 snakes which were trained to locate an open shelter in an eight-hole arena was observed. Results indicate that young corn snakes can easily learn a spatial-escape task that is relevant behaviorally. This was concluded after observing that the number of errors made by snakes decreases as the training period progresses.

Handedness in snakes? Lateralization of coiling behavior in a cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma, population
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the behavioral lateralization in a group of lower vertebrates or snakes called Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma. The result reveals the coiling asymmetries at both the individual and population level.
