High-energy ions produced in explosions of superheated atomic clusters
Article Abstract:
Heating of noble-gas clusters with high-intensity laser pulses produces a highly ionized, very high temperature micro-plasma. Collisional heating of Xe clusters with a high-power, 150-fs pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser produced electrons with energy of up to 1 MeV, an energy much greater than typical solid-target plasmas. Moreover, the energy spectrum of Xe ions is radically different from previously observed ion energy spectra from the intense-field fragmentation of molecules or small clusters.

Halocarbons produced by natural oxidation processes during degradation of organic matter
Article Abstract:
Volatile halogenated organic compounds (VHOCs) are important in atmospheric chemical processes. Halogenated compounds of natural orgin can contribute to levels of VHOC in the atmosphere, and oceans are implicated as one of the main natural sources. Certain terrestrial sources have been identified, and it has been found that halide ions can be alkylated in soils and sediments during the oxidation of organic matter by an electron acceptor such as Fe(III).

The structure of particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) is determined from the methanotroph Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath). The structure provides new insight into the molecular details of biological methane oxidation.
