Histology of the first fish
Article Abstract:
The fossil vertebrate Anatolepis should be considered the earliest known fossil fish. Histologically, it is a vertebrate containing pulp cavities and a terminal dentine network. It lacks a cavernous layer and plates with distinct margins. Most likely, the rear part of the fish was covered by an exoskeleton terminating in a non-bony tail. The appearance time of Anatolepis is similar to the time of origination of the earliest euconodonts. The morphology and histology of Anatolepis is not related to any Cambro-Ordovician vertebrates.

Genes tell a new whale tale
Article Abstract:
Cetacean mitochondrial DNA data indicate that the sperm whale is more closely related to the mysticetes or baleen whales than to the odontocetes or toothed whales. Sperm whales have teeth rather than baleen and have therefore been traditionally classed with the odontocetes. However, genetic research by Michel C. Milinkovitch and colleagues shows that a revision of cetacean taxonomy is in order. Models of whale evolution may also have to be revised.

Genetic tracking of a protected whale
Article Abstract:
The life of an individual whale from its conception in 1964 in the North Atlantic to 1993, when it was sold as raw meat in Osaka, Japan. Genetic plymorphisms in the genes of the meat exactly matched those of a blue/fin whale hybrid harpooned close to Iceland in 1989. The technique is useful in genetic monitoring programmes in the whaling industry and for the international management of whale stocks.
