Phantom of the plains: the continuing saga of the black-footed ferret
Article Abstract:
The black-footed ferret is functionally extinct, and attempts are being made to reintroduce captive-raised ferrets into the wild. The weasels used to thrive in American Western prairies until ranchers began killing off vast amounts of prairie dogs, the ferrets' sole source of food and living quarters. In the 1970s many believed the black-footed ferret was extinct. A small population was discovered in 1981 and conservationists have made several attempts at captive breeding and reintroduction.
